almost everything was like a <i><strong>parody</strong>,</i> full of <i>cringe-worthy remarks, misogynistic overtones & outdated "humour".</i></span></p><p style="text-align:center;"><span class="text-big" style="color:#27ae60;"><strong>Just no respect for the audience, music or the artistes - <i>& I hated it!</i></span></p><p style="text-align:center;"><span class="text-big" style="color:#27ae60;">After about two years in the group<i> '<strong>Denial</strong>'</i> it had also become abundantly obvious that any hopes of <i>progress</i> could <strong>never come to fruition</strong> - instead of <i>rehearsing with me,</i> I was <i>coerced into programming bass & drums</i> for almost every song </span><span style="color:#27ae60;">(many of which were <strong>only attempted a couple of times</strong>)</span><span class="text-big" style="color:#27ae60;"> - even though I made it obvious that I only wanted to play </span><span class="text-huge" style="color:#27ae60;"><i><strong>live</strong></i></span><span class="text-big" style="color:#27ae60;"><i>.</i></span></p><p style="text-align:center;"><span class="text-big" style="color:#27ae60;">At a time when I was determined to develop my <i>keyboard skills </i></span><span style="color:#27ae60;"><i>(having never benefited from piano lessons in childhood) </i></span><span class="text-big" style="color:#27ae60;"> this eventually <i>'<strong>perpetual programming</strong>' </i> seriously ate into my <i><strong>piano practice time</strong> - </i>the <i>desired effect</i> it would seem.</span></p><p style="text-align:center;"><span class="text-big" style="color:#27ae60;"><i><strong>: Refusal to expand </strong>- </i>the very idea of getting a <i>'bass player & drummer'</i> </span><span style="color:#27ae60;">(so we could play <strong>live</strong>) </span><span class="text-big" style="color:#27ae60;"> was <i><strong>bitterly rejected</strong></i> . . . dismissed as </span><span class="text-big" style="color:#8e44ad;"><i>"<strong>a hobby horse</strong>"</i></span><span class="text-big" style="color:#27ae60;"><i> . . . </i>whatever that meant.</span></p><p style="text-align:center;"><span class="text-big" style="color:#27ae60;">After my <i>'<strong>rhythm section</strong>' </i> idea had been <i>'shot down in flames'</i> I suggested adding two female <i>vocalist/performers</i> to the lineup, to <strong>front the band & be an </strong><i><strong>'attractive focal point'</strong></i> - with us providing <i><strong>live</strong> backing of piano, guitar & vocals.</i> Once again, this idea was <i><strong>bitterly rejected </strong></i> with the words;</span></p><p style="text-align:center;"><span class="text-big" style="color:#9b59b6;"><i><strong>"Last week your 'hobby horse' was a bass player & drummer. <p style="text-align: center;"><span class="font_large">Starting off as a collection of <em>rather off the wall songs</em> & then appended with <em>more of the same approach, </em> everything about this effort is <em><strong>different </strong></em> to any of the other albums.<br>This became an exploration into <em>poetry, musical experimentation & indigenous identity.</em><br><br>A lot of the lyrics are <em>deeply personal,</em> & it was for this reason that I felt this tape would have to be <em>gifted </em> to some of my most <em>loyal supporters.</em></span></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><span class="font_large">Surprisingly reactions have been very positive, despite the fact that some tracks were <em>real-time, one-take keyboard/vocal performances, </em> or just jammed with <strong><em>Sharona </em></strong><em>playing acoustic guitar.</em></span></p>

<p><span class="font_regular"><strong>Trivial Information</strong></span></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><span style="color:#2980b9;"><span class="font_large">The songs <em>'So Long, Emerald Eyes, Away, With the Wind & Jig' </em>were all written in minutes after <em>jamming sessions, </em>in the <em>South of Ireland.</em><br>I used to partake in a lot of these sessions with my <em>guitar-playing brothers & their friends -</em> it always <em>sparked my creativity.</em></span><br><span class="font_large">Just a few jamming sessions would be enough to produce <em>a handful of songs</em> - fab times.</span></span></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><br><span style="color:#2ecc71;"><span class="font_large"><em>'I Wanna' </em>was the original title given to the song now called <em>'All Night Long' </em> - but this is <em>a different song all together.</em></span><br><span class="font_large">At the time of writing this, I was listening to a lot of artistes like <strong><em>Horselips</em></strong><em>,</em><strong><em> Planxty</em></strong><em>,</em><strong><em> The Wolf Tones, The Fureys </em></strong><em>&</em><strong><em> Paddy Reilly</em></strong><em>.</em><br>Consequently, there's more of a<em> traditional Irish Folk influence</em> on this whole album.</span><br><br><span class="font_large">From <em><strong>2024 </strong>onward </em> there's going to be a <em>massive surge</em> of interest in <em>Irish music </em></span><span class="font_regular"><em>(& all thing Irish really) </em></span><span class="font_large"><em> </em>not just here in <em>Ireland</em> but <em>across the whole world.</em><br>Unexpected by most </span><span class="font_regular">(and devastating to some)</span><span class="font_large"> - I'll not say what event will trigger this, but I do know that it'll be good - <em>very good!</em></span></span></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><br><span class="font_large"><span style="color:#9b59b6;"><em>'Organ Song' </em>is a kind of <em>accolade </em>to <em><strong>Procol Harum </strong></em>for their classic song <em>'Whiter Shade of Pale' </em>but it's not a <em>rip-off </em> or <em>cover version</em> - more of an <em>'influenced by' </em> in the same way that <em>'Whiter Shade of Pale' </em>itself was <em>'influenced' </em>by <em><strong>JS Bach</strong>.</em><br>The <em>organ </em> on this track is not a <em><strong>Hammond</strong></em> though - it's actually a <em><strong>Yamaha Electone</strong>.</em></span></span></p>

</ul>
<p style="text-align: center;"><span class="font_large"><span style="color:#9b59b6;"><em>'Before a Fall' </em>is based on one of those people who </span></span><span class="font_regular"><span style="color:#9b59b6;">(because they 'live in their <strong>egos</strong>')</span></span><span class="font_large"><span style="color:#9b59b6;"> <em>get their backs up</em> when they encounter someone <em>different </em>- because it reminds them just how <em>unremarkable </em> they really are.<br>Suddenly they're <em>diametrically opposed</em> to <em>all your views </em>& become determined to <em>ridicule, deride & undermine</em> you at every opportunity.<br>Such people are <em><strong>hopelessly lost & in darkness</strong>,</em> yet </span></span><span class="font_regular"><span style="color:#9b59b6;">(ironically)</span></span><span class="font_large"><span style="color:#9b59b6;"> can continue to <em>delude themselves</em> that they are <em>Christian. </em></span></span><span class="font_large"><span style="color:#9b59b6;">How very sad!<br>If only they knew how most people can see right through them.</span></span><br> </p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><span class="font_large"><span style="color:#27ae60;"><em>'Feeling So Low' </em>was written by a superb songwriter - an ex-neighbour of mine called <a contents="Aidan McConnell" data-link-label="" data-link-type="url" href="https://www.youtube.com/user/chockers100" target="_blank"><strong><em>Aidan McConnell</em></strong></a><em>, </em>whos' melodies I regard as being <em>really strong.</em><br>When we were in contact </span></span><span class="font_regular"><span style="color:#27ae60;">(some time ago)</span></span><span class="font_large"><span style="color:#27ae60;"> he was one of the most prolific songwriters I'd met, & happily agreed to me using his song.<br>Also a very nice guy, <strong><em>Aidan </em></strong> is insanely creative, but sadly I didn't get the chance to work with him as much as I would have liked, but I felt his creative potential was huge.</span></span><br> </p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><span class="font_large"><span style="color:#d35400;"><em>'Believe in Me' </em>I wrote for a boy/girl band, which was put together by a promoter I worked with, around 1999 or so.<br>I almost binned it </span></span><span class="font_regular"><span style="color:#d35400;">(I thought it was really cheesy)</span></span><span class="font_large"><span style="color:#d35400;"> but was later glad I didn't, when the group </span></span><span class="font_regular"><span style="color:#d35400;">(called '<em><strong>NI5</strong>'</em>) </span></span><span style="color:#d35400;"><span class="font_large">absolutely loved it, then a local <strong><em>Citybeat DJ</em></strong> said that it could be a hit.<br>Trying to write a <em>'pop song' </em>didn't come naturally, but </span></span><span style="color:#d35400;"><span class="font_large">the only way was to draw inspiration from one of the few <em>'pop groups' </em> I liked - <em><strong>ABBA</strong>.</em><br>Unfortunately </span><span class="font_regular">(or perhaps fortunately)</span><span class="font_large"> <em><strong>NI5</strong></em> never managed to get it together, & disbanded soon after, but thankfully <em>'Believe in Me' </em> has turned out to be one of my <em>well received efforts.</em></span></span><br> </p>

<p style="text-align: center;"><span class="font_large"><span style="color:#2ecc71;">The <em>original recording </em> of <em>'All Night Long' </em>appears on the <em>'<strong>Alfie Syntauri</strong> <strong>EP</strong>' </em>& was an effort to pay tribute to the music of <strong><em>Barry White</em></strong>.<br><em>This recording</em> is a more fresh & straightforward approach, re-recorded for the album.</span></span><br> </p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><span class="font_large"><span style="color:#9b59b6;"><em>'Wasting My Time' & 'Where Did I Go Wrong?' </em>are both about being a <em>round peg in a world of square holes.</em></span></span><br><span class="font_large"><span style="color:#9b59b6;">Having to <em>suffer for your art</em> is an inherent part of <em>being an artist </em> - which has little to do with <em>success,</em> but everything to do with <em>creativity.</em></span></span><br><br><span class="font_large"><span style="color:#9b59b6;">I knew immediately from <strong><em>Sharonas' </em></strong><em> </em>reaction to first hearing <em>'Where Did I Go Wrong?' </em>that <em>she would be singing it</em> - & I'm very glad she did!</span></span><br> </p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><span class="font_large"><em><span style="color:#3498db;">'Little Sad Goodbye' </span></em><span style="color:#3498db;">is not what it might appear to be </span></span><span class="font_regular"><span style="color:#3498db;">(a song about the end of a <em>romance) </em></span></span><span class="font_large"><span style="color:#3498db;">It's <em>actually </em> about the end of a musical partnership with a male performer, which ended <em>somewhat acrimoniously.</em></span></span><br><span class="font_large"><span style="color:#3498db;">However, the <em>female vocal </em> works in any case with the lyrics - thanks again <em><strong>Sharona</strong>!</em></span></span><br> </p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><span class="font_large"><em><span style="color:#336600;">'Ballintoy' </span></em><span style="color:#336600;">is a <em>Heavenly</em> little village on the North Coast of Ireland, not far from the <em>Giants' Causway.</em></span></span><br><span class="font_large"><span style="color:#336600;">I found it a long time ago, while out driving with <em><strong>Corinne</strong>, </em>& it quickly became one of '<em>our places', </em>as it has to be one of the <em>most beautiful places in the world!</em></span></span></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><span class="font_large"><span style="color:#336600;">I had started writing <em>'Ballintoy' </em> but the lyrics were <em>unfinished,</em> until I heard a news report about an elderly couple who had gone <em>m</em><em>issing.</em><br>Eventually their car was found parked at <em>Ballintoy Harbour,</em> with the keys <em>still in it.</em></span></span></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><span class="font_large"><span style="color:#336600;">It turned out that one of them had been diagnosed with a <em>terminal illness,</em> so they had decided to end their days together - which is <em>tragically sad,</em> but their story helped me finish the song - hence the <em>rather dark </em>lyrics.</span></span></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><span class="font_large"><span style="color:#336600;"><em>Ballintoy Harbour</em> was used for filming in the <em>TV series <strong>Game of Thrones </strong></em> which has greatly hightened its' popularity as a tourist destination.</span></span></p>

<p style="text-align: center;"><span class="font_large"><strong><em>Marketed as a 'stage piano' & with its' editable patterns & arranger functions, Casios' Privia PX-350 seemed to offer solo keyboardist/performers almost everything they needed in a light & portable instrument - but it didn't quite live up to expectations.</em></strong></span></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><span class="font_regular"><em>It has since been replaced with the</em></span><span class="font_large"><em> <strong>Privia PX-360</strong> </em></span><span class="font_regular"><em>& its' more expensive sibling, the</em></span><span class="font_large"><em> <strong>PX-560.</strong></em></span></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><span class="font_large">Generally - not a bad all round keyboard - but <em>'keyboard'</em> is more appropriate than <em>'piano'</em> as a description. <br>The key action is impressive </span><span class="font_regular">(feels just like a grand piano)</span><span class="font_large"> - but unfortunately it doesn't sound like one. </span></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><span class="font_large">Casios' previous <strong>'Privia'</strong> offerings </span><span class="font_regular">(like the <strong>PX-410r</strong> for example)</span><span class="font_large"> filled me with high expectations, but I must admit to being very disappointed with the <em>'piano voices'</em> on this model! <br>The <em>'acoustic piano sounds'</em> all seem to be derived from just one </span><span class="font_regular">(rather dull)</span><span class="font_large"> piano sample, which gets <em>'very thin' </em>towards the top of the key range. </span></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><span class="font_large">Don't get me wrong - as a <em>'keyboard' </em> it sounds good, but with the <strong>AIR sound source</strong>, Casio seem to have placed <em>polyphony</em> above <em>sound quality</em> - hence a noticeable regression in <em>clarity</em> compared to earlier <strong>Privias</strong> which had the previous </span><span class="font_regular">(in my view superior)</span><span class="font_large"> <strong>ZPI sound source.</strong> </span></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><span class="font_large">The electric pianos & other <em>'non-piano sounds'</em> are rather good though, but this being a <em>'stage piano'</em> - it really fails to <em>'deliver' </em>in the <em>'acoustic piano'</em> department, as far as I'm concerned. </span></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><span class="font_large">The <em>stereo audio input</em> should make it possible to easily monitor your mix </span><span class="font_regular">(via the Casios' speakers onstage, especially if you have the mixer going through the Privia first & then into your PA amplifier)</span><span class="font_large"> - but in practice it lacks the headroom of much cheaper Casios </span><span class="font_regular">(like the <strong>CDP-230r</strong> & <strong>WK-7500</strong> - both of which have clearer piano sounds)</span><span class="font_large"> for this input to be really useful. </span></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><span class="font_large"><em>Registration memories</em> allow you to recall <em>complete song setups,</em> which should make things easier </span><span class="font_regular">(and quicker)</span><span class="font_large"> - but unfortunately these registrations can't be named - which really limits their usefulness onstage. </span></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><span class="font_large">Audio </span><span class="font_regular">(wav file)</span><span class="font_large"> recording is possible too, but again - the usefulness of this function is seriously limited by the fact that your <em>'wave file songs'</em> cannot really be named &/or placed in your <em>desired order</em> .....a curious decision which renders this function as little more than a gimmick. </span></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><span class="font_large">On a positive note, overall build quality is superb & the backlit display screen is easy to read in low light conditions. <br>Also the <em>accompaniment keyboard chord tracking</em> & <em>timing</em> is excellent - way better than the older <em>Privia pianos </em>mentioned. </span></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><span class="font_large">For a keyboard player wanting to use the full range </span><span class="font_regular">(88 keys)</span><span class="font_large"> with or without <em>rhythm accompaniment,</em> it'll do the job <em>very well,</em> but if you are a <em>'pianist'</em> expecting <em>'acceptable quality piano sounds'</em> you would be well advised to look elsewhere - even <em>entry level</em> <strong> </strong>keyboards from <strong>some other manufacturers</strong> will give you <em>far better acoustic piano sounds. </em></span></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><span class="font_large">Because of the <em>'average quality'</em> of the actual <em>'acoustic piano sound'</em> on this instrument - it's not really </span><span class="font_regular">(in my view)</span><span class="font_large"> a <em>'stage piano'</em> at all - it's a reasonably good quality <em>'keyboard' with 88 weighted keys.</em></span></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"> </p>
<p style="text-align: center;"> </p>Nyal Purcelltag:nyalpurcell.com,2005:Post/55044382018-11-10T20:34:22+00:002022-12-29T08:43:48+00:00Band or banned?<p style="text-align: center;"><span class="font_xl">Band or banned?</span></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"> </p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><span class="font_large"><img src="//d10j3mvrs1suex.cloudfront.net/u/198663/ad207dc55fe692793d1e6a9a01f9ad73e7d66f84/original/tour.jpeg/!!/b:W10=.jpg" class="size_l justify_center border_" /></span><span class="font_small"> </span></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><span class="font_large">It's interesting the <em><strong>phonetic similarity</strong> </em>between the word <strong><em>'band'</em> </strong> & <strong><em>'banned.'</em></strong></span></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><span class="font_large">In my </span><span class="font_regular">(<em>unfortunate)</em></span><span class="font_large"> experience - the two have always amounted to the <em>same thing,</em> because the biggest obstacle to gathering & keeping a band together - is <strong><em>narcissism!</em></strong></span></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><span class="font_large">I've always had the <em>opposing viewpoint</em> to the majority of people I've <em>"<strong>had the privilege</strong>"</em> of sharing <em>band space </em>with over the years.</span></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><span class="font_large">If I came across someone who was <em>extraordinarily talented </em> - I would see that as an <strong>asset</strong> ....a <em>'star'</em> to brighten our <em>'constellation'</em> all the more. The more <em>talented people</em> you have in a band, the stronger & more creative the band becomes, & the greater the music that they will produce - <em>theoretically.</em></span></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><span class="font_large">It's also very <em>inspiring </em>to be in the company of <em>uniguely attractive</em> & <em>talented people</em> because they raise the standards of performance, creativity & presentation - all of which is demonstrably</span><span class="font_large"> beneficial to a bands' public appeal.</span></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><span class="font_large">Because it doesn't take long to realise that the <em>"music industry"</em> is full of <em>hetero-phobic, gate-keeping dickheads, </em>it seemed to me that the best way to forge a career in music would be to take it directly to the public, as a member of a band, playing <em>live, original music.</em></span></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><span class="font_large">In practice however, this proved <em>troublesome & evasive</em> at best. Assuming my view about talented people to be <em>'the norm'</em> </span><span class="font_regular"><em>(among career musicians)</em></span><span class="font_large"> was what proved to be my downfall on so many occasions. While I preferred to work alongside the most talented & attractive people that could possibly be found, the other band members simply saw them as <em>'a threat'</em> - rivals who's talents were to be <em>'hidden'</em> - for fear of being <em>'upstaged.'</em> (???)</span></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><span class="font_large">If the band had a <em><strong>heart-throb</strong></em> loved by women, instead of seeing that as a <em>feather in the cap of the band, </em></span><span class="font_regular"><em>(& hence something that could get us more gigs)</em></span><span class="font_large"><em> </em>other members would <em>get upset</em> because it <em>wasn't <strong>them</strong></em> getting admiration from women.</span></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><span class="font_large">Just can't understand that shit! <em>I mean, really???</em> - It's people letting their <em>own egos</em> get in the way of a potential career - presuming a career in music is what they wanted ...or thought they wanted.</span></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><span class="font_large">There was always a <em>'clique of mediocrities'</em> who would do anything against the <em>'more brilliant ones'</em> who they envied & despised - from singing/playing over them, turning their mics down or off, unplugging their instruments, insisting on <em>unsuitable keys </em>for their singing voices, etc ....& that was when they weren't making them the butt of their jokes, making accusations against them, refusing to ever believe a word they say </span><span class="font_regular">(no matter how honest they were)</span><span class="font_large"> & </span><span class="font_regular">(often times)</span><span class="font_large"> ganging up on them at every opportunity.</span></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><span class="font_large"><img src="//d10j3mvrs1suex.cloudfront.net/u/198663/4415cedb63ebc357f3c5307099855b5bed8934bb/original/quote-jealousy-is-the-tribute-which-mediocrity-pays-to-genius-fulton-j-sheen-26-91-23.jpg/!!/b:W10=.jpg" class="size_l justify_center border_" /></span></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><span class="font_large">In the end, you just get to the point where - once you see envy raising it's <em>stupid, narcissistic head,</em> you just give the owner a <em>wide birth</em> - because envy is only ever present in <em>morons, liars & idiots!</em></span></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><span class="font_large">When you become part of a band, there shouldn't be any more <em>'<strong>I</strong>' </em>or '<em><strong>ME</strong>'</em> - because it should be all about <strong><em>'the music'</em></strong> - which means only thinking in terms of the band as <strong><em>'a collective.'</em></strong> </span></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><span class="font_large">When you join a band, you're supposed to become part of the <em>machinery that produces music</em> - but the sad reality is that so many people just don't </span><span class="font_regular">(or won't)</span><span class="font_large"> get that, because they're too <strong>egotistical</strong> to ever "<em>suffer the indignity" </em>of <strong><em>being just a part of anything.</em></strong></span></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><span class="font_large">In the end, I got tired of the <em>perpetual cycle </em>of auditioning, recruiting & rehearsing, only to have members fighting about <em>stupid & irrelevant things</em> like the 'choice of covers' </span><span class="font_regular">(when our agreed goal was a <strong>fully</strong> <strong>original set</strong> anyway)</span><span class="font_large"> & who's not carrying gear up the stairs <em>fast enough</em>, & who's <em>not allowed to dance onstage </em></span><span class="font_regular"><em>(oh yeah, better to be stiff as a board - that'll really get you more gigs - ha!!)</em></span></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><span class="font_xl">In reality, such things are nothing more than a means by which <strong><em>dull & unremarkable people</em></strong> seek to punish those<strong><em> with star quality</em></strong> for being too <em>sexy, talented & creative</em> for their liking.</span></p>

<p style="text-align: center;"><span class="font_regular">Above image of Jesus derived from data taken from the Shroud of Turin<em>.</em></span></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"> </p>
<p><span class="font_large">We all know about the well publicised Carbon C14 dating test in the late 80's, which basically told atheists all over the world <strong>exactly what they wanted to hear</strong> - but there's an <strong>awful lot</strong> we haven't been told.</span></p>
<p><span class="font_large">The fact that the C14 test </span><span class="font_regular">(based on vague, pseudo-scientific assumptions from the outset)</span><span class="font_large"> has now itself been <strong>largely discredited</strong>.</span></p>
<p><span class="font_large">The fact that the <em>Shroud sample</em> had been taken from a corner that had been re-weaved </span><span class="font_regular">(repaired)</span><span class="font_large"> in the 1600's after being cut for a relic - the worst possible place to take a sample from ...& they knew it.</span></p>
<p><span class="font_large">The fact that the shroud itself has raised more scientific questions than answers, & has both baffled & intrigued scientists in equal measure.</span></p>
<p><span class="font_large">Some key discoveries from analysis of the Shroud of Turin include the following:</span></p>
<ul> <li><span class="font_large">Three dimensional (3D) information inherent in the image,</span></li> <li><span class="font_large">No traces of paint or artist rendering of any kind,</span></li> <li><span class="font_large">blood revealing a high level of bilirubin - consistent with the trauma of crucifixion,</span></li> <li><span class="font_large">a blood type impossible in a male ....except in the case of a <strong>Virgin Birth</strong>,</span></li> <li><span class="font_large">blood trails & pooling consistent with crucifixion,</span></li> <li><span class="font_large">the images were generated from <strong>inside the shroud</strong> - & these included microscopic objects,</span></li> <li><span class="font_large">flower & pollen traces including some known to grow only within 5 miles of Jerusalem,</span></li> <li><span class="font_large">many findings consistent with <strong>specific Biblical accounts</strong> of the crucifixion of Jesus.</span></li>

<p><span style="color:#4e5f70;"><span class="font_large">"Archaeologists are Concerned </span></span></p>
<p><span style="color:#4e5f70;"><span class="font_large">The unreliability of carbon 14 date testing is a great concern to honest archaeologists. They get particularly concerned when C14 testing shows obviously inaccurate results and they are left in uncertainty about the reliability of the dates that they have previously never questioned. </span></span></p>
<p><span style="color:#4e5f70;"><span class="font_large">New or Old? </span></span></p>
<p><span style="color:#4e5f70;"><span class="font_large">Some examples of abnormal C14 results include testing of recently harvested, live mollusc shells from the Hawaiian coast that showed that they had died 2000 years ago and snail shells just killed in Nevada, USA, dated in at 27,000 years old. A freshly killed seal at McMurdo Sound, Antarctica, yielded a death age of 1300 years ago. </span></span></p>
<p><span style="color:#4e5f70;"><span class="font_large">A petrified miner’s hat and wooden fence posts were unearthed from an abandoned 19th century gold hunter’s town in Australia’s outback. Results from radiocarbon dating said that they were 6000 years old."</span></span></p>

<p style="text-align: center;"><span class="font_large">Ok - now that I've got your attention.</span></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><span class="font_large">Most people are unaware of the actual differences between digital & analogue recordings, & <em>why would they - unless there's a reason for knowing?</em><br><br>The general assumption has been that all things digital are superior to analogue, but </span><span class="font_regular">(while digital offers some advantages)</span><span class="font_large"> people are now waking up to the fact that, although generally quieter, more portable & less corruptible - digital recordings are <em><strong>inferior</strong> in every other possible way!</em><br><br><strong>You only have to compare a CD to a vinyl recording of the same album to reach that conclusion.</strong><br><br><em>A vinyl or tape recording has much more life, detail & definition than even the most high quality 24 bit/192Khz digital recordings can come even close to.</em><br><br>Sure, the analogue recordings have some low level tape hiss or stylus rumble, but in reality you simply don't hear any of it once the music starts.<br>You hear the music, in all it's finest detail, all the dynamics & all the expression from every musical phrase, from every musician that played on it.<br><br>Digital recordings </span><span class="font_regular">(good as they may seem)</span><span class="font_large"> simply <em>cannot capture that</em> - & here's why.</span><br><br><span class="font_xl">Here's the science bit - concentrate:</span><br> </p>
<p style="text-align: center;"> </p>
<p><span class="font_large"><img src="//d10j3mvrs1suex.cloudfront.net/u/198663/bd0bf329e2f79f198036d51dc1cc28ea73f3f825/original/04253.png?1490521129" class="size_l justify_center border_" style="text-align: center;" /></span></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><br><span class="font_large"><em><strong>Refer to the picture above.</strong></em><br>When you record digitally, what you get is </span><span class="font_regular">(basically)</span><span class="font_large"> a 'mathematical representation' of the waveform.<br><br>A <strong>waveform</strong> is what you get when you turn a <strong>sound</strong> </span><span class="font_regular">(like a voice)</span><span class="font_large"> into an electrical signal </span><span class="font_regular">(using a microphone for example)</span><span class="font_large"> - this waveform can be recorded </span><span class="font_regular">(stored)</span><span class="font_large"> either in digital memory </span><span class="font_regular">(a digital recording)</span><span class="font_large"> or on tape or vinyl </span><span class="font_regular">(an analogue recording)</span><span class="font_large">.<br><br>The original signal </span><span class="font_regular">(from a microphone for example)</span><span class="font_large"> is an analogue signal & looks like the waveform in the top of the picture.<br><br>This waveform if recorded analogically </span><span class="font_regular">(on tape or vinyl)</span><span class="font_large"> will look </span><span class="font_regular">(depending on the quality of the recording)</span><span class="font_large"> <strong>more or less exactly the same</strong> as the original signal, albeit with some low level noise </span><span class="font_regular">(hiss)</span><span class="font_large"> which should be relatively unnoticeable.</span></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><span class="font_large">Like sounds in the real world, analogue signals are <em>'continuously variable' </em> - in the same way our biological systems & signals are.<br><br>The analogue recording will retain <strong>all the life & movement of the original performance</strong>, in the finest detail - subjectively speaking,<em> </em><strong><em>it lives & breathes just like the real performance</em>.</strong><br><br>A digital recording by contrast, can only </span><span class="font_regular">(at best)</span><span class="font_large"> render <em>'a representation'</em> of the original signal, & looks like the waveform at the bottom of the picture.</span></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><span class="font_large">Digital signals are only <em>'varied' </em>at specific points in time & magnitude & this inevitably limits the amount of detail & harmonic content possible.<br><br>You'll notice that the amount of detail is limited by the amount of times from left to right </span><span class="font_regular">(sampling frequency)</span><span class="font_large"> & the amount of steps from the bottom line to the top </span><span class="font_regular">(bit depth)</span><span class="font_large"> that the waveform can be represented.<br><br><em><strong>What you actually get from a digital recording is a tiny percentage of the original.</strong></em><br><br>In short: analogue recordings give you the <em><strong>actual, real signal</strong></em> - while even the best digital recordings are nothing more than an <em>approximation or rendering</em>, to <strong>fool you</strong> into thinking you're hearing music.<br><br>Don't get me wrong, it works quite well, until you hear music again played from a decent turntable or tape deck - <em>then you realise why you didn't bother to replace your Mp3 player ....& your CD collection is still covered in dust.</em><br><br>To the generation raised on rap, hip- hop, nu-metal & dance music - they'll probably never see any advantage to analogue recordings, because that music has <em>a limited dynamic range.</em></span><br><span class="font_regular">(One of the disadvantages of digital recording is that it needs to be compressed to make full use of the bit depth, & to disguise its' inherent lack of definition).</span><br><br><span class="font_large">But for those of us who grew up in a time when music was <em><strong>always performed on musical instruments & vocals were recorded with not much more than a little compression</strong></em>, the quality & dynamics of musical performances is important to the experience of listening to music.<br><br>That being the case, it's <em><strong>perfectly understandable</strong></em> why vinyl & tape are making a huge comeback - <em>especially with the new generation who are now discovering hidden treasures among their families' old vinyl record collections.</em><br><br>If you love music & you haven't discovered or revisited vinyl records or analogue tape, perhaps you should - otherwise you are <em><strong>definitely missing out</strong></em> on what music is really all about .....</span><span class="font_xl"><em>human expression!</em></span></p>
